How to make your small business TikTok famous

It's no longer about advertising and producing content for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram only. Brands are using TikTok to take their businesses to new exciting heights and tap into the latest consumer generation. With more than 500 million users and counting, who could say no?

Tips to help you introduce your small business to the world of TikTok

Study TikTok

Like with everything in life, to be successful at something you have to understand it first. And the best way to understand TikTok is to download the app and figure out:

  • how to interact with other users;
  • how bigger brands are positioning their content;
  • what the trends are and how your brand could join these trends in a natural way; and
  • who you are trying to reach.

Create fun and engaging content

If you have done your research, you will understand that TikTok is all about fun and creativity. The people who use this platform come up with awesome stuff to showcase themselves in different ways.

That is why it is so important to take their lead and start creating your own content. I am sure that you have noticed that their videos are not super polished, but authentic. This makes it even easier to come up with an idea. Pick up your smartphone and start recording!

Just remember that you should be true to your brand. Do not do something outrageous that will ruin your reputation. Keep it simple, light-hearted and be true to your brand.

Create or join a hashtag challenge

An awesome way to get the word out about your brand while getting people engaged, entertained and interested is by creating or joining a hashtag challenge.

For example, Guess launched the #InMyDenim challenge where they encouraged customers to film themselves in creative ways wearing Guess’s new denim line with the hashtag.

Or you could join an existing hashtag challenge, for example the #SmallBusinessCheck hashtag, and use it to showcase your small business to entrepreneurs around the globe.

Partner with local TikTok influencers

With South Africa’s vibrant culture, we also have a vibrate list of South African TikTokers who are taking the world by storm.

Partnering with an influencer who matches your brand's image will get you one step closer to the audience you are looking for.

Also, Generation Z is typically opposed to anything that looks like the traditional ads we are all used to. So, working with TikTok influencers can help you make a connection with Gen Z.

Learn about TikTok advertising and take advantage of its offerings

Ads are really important if you want to reach new customers and spread the word about your brand.

TikTok offers four different types of ads:

  • Infeed content

This is similar to Snapchat or Instagram story ads, supporting multiple features, for example website clicks or app downloads.

  • Brand takeovers

This enables brands take over TikTok for a certain region or even globally for the day. You can then create images, GIFs and videos with embedded links to landing pages or hashtag challenges. Super-cool, right?

  • Hashtag challenges

Everyone could use some help. Instead of trying to make a hashtag challenge go viral on your own, you can use promoted hashtags to get more engagement.

  •       Branded lenses

Branded lenses are like the 2D- or 3D-lenses Snapchat for faces and photos.
