So how do you find the right career? It’s a big question, and there are no wrong answers. Here are a few tips to help set you in the right direction.

Discover your strengths
Assess your strengths and weaknesses to find out what you are good at. If your school has a guidance counsellor, speak to them about aptitude tests. You can also go online and search for personality and skills tests that will help you understand your strengths.

Do your research
Knowledge is power, and the more you know the better you will be able to make informed decisions. Read lots. The more you read the more you will learn, and the more possibilities will open up. The internet is your friend and it’s packed with information that can help inform your decision. Once you have picked a career that interests you, research it thoroughly.

Get the inside scoop
Once you have an idea of what it is that you want to do, reach out to somebody who is employed in that industry and role. Spend time shadowing them at their job to see if it is everything that you think it is. Pay close attention to what you learn because it will come in handy one day, even if you end up going in a different direction. Experience is everything.

Keep your options open
There are great options for people who are still undecided about their career choice, such as a Bachelor of Arts, or a Social Science degree. These courses teach you to think, expose you to new ideas and expand your mind exponentially and will put you well on the road to any number of careers, including teaching, law, journalism and international relations.
