Celebrating your achievements is important, even during a pandemic

We’ve all been through a lot this past year. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on every part of our lives: the way we feel, work, go to school, have meetings, socialise, fall in love, mourn our loved ones and celebrate special occasions. There are no massive concerts or live sports events to attend and no plays or dance recitals to lose ourselves to. It’s sad, yo.

Things have changed in a way no one could’ve ever imagined and the pandemic has affected our mental health. As a result, it’s  important to find reasons to celebrate the milestones in our lives. From passing your matric and getting accepted into your dream university, getting that job, finally updating your CV or something as simple as just waking up in the morning. We all need to take time to focus on our family, on the people we love and their accomplishments. This pandemic has taught us that nothing is more important than the people you love.

Right now, we all need a spark of joy, so here are some ways to celebrate your small victories during the pandemic.

  • Take a trip to your favorite place on earth:

Now we aren’t saying break the bank and book a flight ticket to somewhere exotic but rather to channel the world’s favourite purple dinosaur, Barney! All you need is a little imagination, and you can turn any place – even your home – into your or your loved one’s favourite place. Whether it’s Gold Reef City, the Eiffel Tower or even the Taj Mahal, all you can do is print out some cool signs, dress up, set up some cool games and make some themed food.

  • Show your loved ones some love

Feeling like you still have a connection with the people you care about is important, but the pandemic has made that so much more difficult. It’s easy to feel out of touch and forgotten. Here’s an idea for celebrating the new matriculant in the home: collect congratulatory  letters from everyone in their life, hide them around your home, create a treasure map and let them hunt around the house to find all of the letters of pride and support. This will let friends and family who cannot be around, feel included as well.

  • Create a photo scavenger hunt.

Personally, this is my favourite outdoor activity. Not only will you get some fresh air, but you’ll also get to have some fun while celebrating a graduation, birthday, matric results or even getting that dream job.

All you need to do is:

  1. Make a list of people to invite, put them into teams of who they interact with daily or live with.
  2. Find an outdoor spot, like a local park, and take photos of at least 20 things around it like signs, graffiti and jungle gyms.
  3. Create a WhatsApp group, add all the invitees and send all the pictures to the group.
  4. Have everyone roam around and take selfies with all the things you sent to the group.
  5. Have everyone meet at a cool outdoor spot for a meal and give a prize to the team that got the most selfies.

  • Share the love with others:

This pandemic may be hard on most of us, but there are others less fortunate dealing with harder effects of the lockdown than us. Show your loved one you care by making a donation in their name to a charity or relief fund that’s close to their heart.
